Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has revealed that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing stringent bail conditions as he seeks release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Gatekeepers News reports that El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 19.
The anti-graft agency had, on April 13, arraigned the former governor before a Kaduna High Court on an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged fraud and abuse of office.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Sanusi described the bail conditions imposed on El-Rufai as demanding, stating that the requirements for his release include guarantees from highly placed individuals.
“For example, take a look at what’s going on with my brother, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai that he is currently in custody and the conditions for his release are very tough,” the Emir said.
“They said that both an emir and a high-ranking government official need to sign his bail.”
Sanusi’s comments come amid ongoing legal proceedings involving the former Kaduna governor, whose case has continued to attract public and political attention.
