Andy Burnham has been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield following the resignation of former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier today.
Gatekeepers News reports that the swearing-in took place in the House of Commons on Monday as political attention shifted to the race for Labour Party leadership and the next prime minister.
Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has confirmed his intention to seek the Labour leadership and is widely regarded as the leading candidate to replace Starmer. Several senior Labour figures, including Wes Streeting, have publicly endorsed his bid, strengthening expectations that he could secure the position with little opposition.
Starmer announced his resignation after facing mounting pressure within the Labour Party and declining public support. He is expected to remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is formally chosen. Labour’s leadership nomination process is set to begin in July, with Burnham potentially taking over sooner if no challenger emerges.
Burnham has pledged to focus on political stability, economic growth and public service reform, presenting his candidacy as an opportunity to renew the Labour government.
