Police To Prosecute Man Over Alleged Assault Of Woman During Soup Dispute In Abia

Abia State Police Command says it will arraign a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, for allegedly assaulting a woman, Amarachi Chinyere, during a dispute over a pot of soup in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that the case gained public attention after a video showing the alleged assault circulated on social media. According to the police, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested the suspect following intelligence gathering linked to the viral footage.  

Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka said the suspect, an indigene of Akanu Ohafia, is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). She added that he would be charged in court after investigations are concluded, with possible charges including assault and attempted murder.  

The command condemned the incident, describing it as a barbaric act of domestic violence. It also urged residents to refrain from all forms of violence, stressing its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and holding offenders accountable.  

The police reiterated that violence is unacceptable under any circumstance and assured the public that the case would be pursued in accordance with the law.
