National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has taken custody of 6,778.5 kilogrammes (about 6.8 tonnes) of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, intercepted at Apapa Port in Lagos during a joint operation involving Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and other security agencies.
Gatekeepers News reports that speaking during the handover ceremony on Wednesday, NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, said the seizures resulted from two separate operations carried out on June 15 and June 24 following months of intelligence gathering. He noted that the operation involved collaboration between the NDLEA, the NCS and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
According to the agency, the drug consignments were shipped from Canada through multiple international routes in an attempt to evade detection. Investigators tracked the containers across several countries before intercepting them at the Lagos port.
Marwa said the agency’s efforts would go beyond confiscating illicit drugs, stressing that authorities would pursue those behind the shipments, dismantle their networks and confiscate assets linked to the criminal enterprise. He also commended customs and other security agencies for their cooperation and intelligence sharing.
The seizure is one of the latest major drug interceptions by the NDLEA as authorities intensify efforts to combat transnational drug trafficking and prevent illegal substances from reaching Nigerian communities.
