2027 Election: LP Names Public Health Expert Bintu Konto As Vice President Candidate

Labour Party (LP) has named public health expert and humanitarian practitioner, Bintu Konto, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Gatekeepers News reports that Konto will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Chibuzo Okereke, following her endorsement by the party’s leadership.

Announcing the decision in a statement on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, said Konto’s nomination followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders.

Asogwa described the ticket as one built on competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism and a proven commitment to public service.

According to the party, Konto has over three decades of experience in healthcare, humanitarian intervention and community development.

She previously worked with Catholic Relief Services, where she held several leadership positions, including Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer, leading health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian initiatives, particularly in conflict-affected communities across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

A trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has served as a lecturer in community health.

She is also a member of Nigeria’s Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund and the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).

The Labour Party said her selection underscores its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership. The party expressed confidence that Konto’s experience in public health, humanitarian work, women’s empowerment and community mobilisation would strengthen its campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
