Sani Yellow, a notorious bandit commander linked to a string of deadly attacks in Zamfara State, has reportedly been killed in Anka Local Government Area, although conflicting accounts have emerged over the circumstances surrounding his death.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to multiple local sources cited by TheCable and counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, Yellow was shot dead on Friday at Dan Jibga Market by armed men believed to be loyal to rival bandit kingpin Dogo Gide. The killing is said to reflect the ongoing rivalry among criminal gangs battling for territory and influence across parts of Zamfara.
However, another account attributed his death to a coordinated security operation involving military personnel and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes deployed to support counter-banditry efforts in the state.
Security sources stated the operation led to the elimination of the feared commander, though TheCable said it could not independently verify which version was accurate.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful, as the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyinyechi Anele, did not respond to calls, text messages or WhatsApp enquiries at the time of reporting.
Sani Yellow was regarded as one of the most influential bandit leaders operating in the forests of Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring local government areas.
He had been accused of masterminding attacks on rural communities, mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and other violent raids across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
