A powerful storm swept through Edmonton, the capital of Alberta province, causing widespread flooding, road closures and damage to public infrastructure after heavy rainfall and strong winds battered the city.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to local reports cited by TheCable, the storm struck around 8 p.m. on Friday, toppling trees, damaging traffic signal poles and flooding several public facilities, including recreation centres.
The severe weather disrupted transportation and municipal services, prompting authorities to urge motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to exercise caution while travelling through affected areas.
The storm also forced the temporary closure of several city facilities. The Telus World of Science, Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre and Heritage Amphitheatre remained shut on Saturday, while flooding led to the closure of the main pool at the Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre. However, the Commonwealth Recreation Centre reopened after briefly closing on Friday evening.
Emergency crews continued clearing debris and assessing damage across the city as residents dealt with flooded roads and disrupted services. Authorities advised the public to avoid flooded areas and remain alert while recovery efforts continue.
