Federal Government has renamed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, saying the decision recognises President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s role in conceiving the project during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State about 27 years ago.
Gatekeepers News reports that Minister of Works Dave Umahi announced the development during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday. He said the decision followed consultations with the ministry’s leadership and described the 750-kilometre highway as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. Umahi said Tinubu not only envisioned the project decades ago but also had the opportunity to implement it as President.
The minister also disclosed that President Tinubu approved a 400-kilometre extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway and provided updates on other ongoing federal road projects, including sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He said construction is progressing simultaneously across several sections of the coastal highway.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which began under the Tinubu administration in 2024, is expected to connect Lagos to Cross River through several coastal states. The project is designed to improve transportation, boost trade, tourism and economic activities across southern Nigeria.
