Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win their second FIFA World Cup title on Sunday, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to end the defending champions’ reign at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Gatekeepers News reports that the goal, which came in the 106th minute, handed Spain their second World Cup title and first since winning the tournament in 2010.
Torres, who came off the bench in the second half, finally broke the deadlock after Spain dominated much of the match but struggled to convert their chances. Nico Williams played a key role in the winning move, setting up Torres to score after Argentina had been reduced to 10 men following Enzo Fernández’s red card in extra time.
Spain controlled possession and created far more opportunities throughout the contest, while Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, found it difficult to threaten the Spanish defence. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a series of outstanding saves to keep Argentina in the game before Torres eventually found the breakthrough.
The victory ended Argentina’s reign as world champions and capped an impressive tournament for Spain, who conceded only one goal throughout the competition. Coach Luis de la Fuente also added the World Cup trophy to the UEFA European Championship title he guided Spain to in 2024.
