The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reminded American citizens who hold dual nationality that they must use a valid U.S. passport whenever they enter or leave the United States, warning that travelling on a foreign passport could lead to complications.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a travel advisory, the embassy urged U.S. citizens living abroad to ensure their American passports are valid before making travel plans. It also advised those whose passports have expired or are close to expiring to renew them in advance to avoid disruptions during their journey.
The embassy further noted that many countries require passports to have at least six months of validity before allowing entry, advising travellers to check the entry requirements of their destination before departure.
The reminder forms part of the U.S. government’s guidance for dual nationals, stressing that American citizens are required to use a U.S. passport when entering or departing the country, regardless of whether they also hold another nationality.
