Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Kalu, has said President Bola Tinubu currently faces no formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, arguing that opposition parties remain too divided to mount a serious challenge.
Gatekeepers News reports that Kalu made the remarks during Wednesday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television, where he attributed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s advantage to the inability of opposition parties to unite behind a common platform and candidate.
“He has no competition. The opposition is very weak. He has no competition because you check what we did during the primaries, the number of people, our membership, things Tinubu has done all over Nigeria, the new roads he has created. If they were together, we would start having some sleepless nights. Now they are not together,” Kalu said.
The senator, however, acknowledged that the Tinubu administration had not done enough to communicate its achievements to Nigerians, noting that the President had shown little interest in promoting the activities of his government.
He also claimed that Tinubu had “a lot of archenemies” both within and outside government who were working against his administration.
Despite this, Kalu expressed confidence in the President’s performance, saying Tinubu had so far performed at about 65 per cent and could reach 70 per cent by September or October.
He further predicted that voters in northern Nigeria would ultimately support the President based on what he described as the administration’s achievements.
Kalu’s comments come amid continued political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
Attempts to build a broad opposition coalition in 2025 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) initially brought together prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
However, disagreements over the coalition’s structure and leadership later triggered fresh political realignments, leaving the opposition fragmented across different political parties.
Obi and Kwankwaso subsequently left the ADC.
Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the leading contenders are expected to include President Tinubu of the APC, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, and Seyi Makinde of the All Progressives Movement (APM).
In the 2023 presidential election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner after he secured more than eight million votes, ahead of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who each polled over six million votes, while Kwankwaso received more than one million votes.
