Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has increased the quarterly international spending limit on its naira-denominated cards to $40,000.
Gatekeepers News reports that the latest adjustment represents a 100 percent increase from the $20,000 limit announced by the bank as of August 10 and a 566.7 percent rise from the $6,000 limit introduced in May.
GTBank announced the new limit in an email to customers on Tuesday.
“Dear Customer, The international spending limit on your GTBank Naira Card has been doubled to $40,000 per quarter. Pay for flights, hotels, school fees & more,” the notice read.
The bank also disclosed that the foreign exchange rate applicable to international payments made with its naira cards was N1,367 per dollar on Tuesday.
“Please note: FX rates are subject to change in line with prevailing market conditions,” GTBank said.
The latest increase comes amid a rise in Nigeria’s external reserves, which climbed to $52.14 billion, the highest level recorded so far this year, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Nigerian banks resumed international transactions on naira cards in 2025, about three years after the service was suspended.
On July 5, 2025, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Wema Bank and GTBank separately notified customers that international transactions had resumed on their naira cards.
When the service was initially restored, GTBank set the quarterly international spending limit at $1,000.
The bank also capped international cash withdrawals through automated teller machines (ATMs) at $500, while online and point-of-sale (POS) transactions were limited to $1,000 per quarter.
The latest adjustment marks a significant expansion of the amount GTBank customers can spend internationally using their naira cards.
