The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that its official X account was compromised in an attempted cyberattack, prompting the military authorities to activate measures to regain control of the account.
Gatekeepers News reports that Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, describing the incident as a cybersecurity matter.
Uba said the DHQ detected an attempted unauthorised compromise of its official X account and immediately activated appropriate technical measures to secure the platform and prevent further unauthorised access.
He said efforts were ongoing to fully restore the military’s control of the account.
The Defence Headquarters consequently warned members of the public, the media and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading information that may be published from the account while the issue is being resolved.
The military authorities also directed the public to rely on its verified Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp channels for official and verified information until access to the X account is restored.
The development comes as the military increasingly relies on social media platforms to communicate operational updates, security information and other official announcements to Nigerians.
The DHQ assured the public that measures were in place to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
