Five people, including four teenagers, have been killed while 10 others sustained injuries after two separate buildings collapsed in Kano State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incidents occurred on Saturday at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, according to Saminu Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service.
The fire service said its emergency response unit received distress calls about the incidents at approximately 2:34pm and 2:40pm.
At Gaida, near a filling station, an unfinished building measuring about 50 by 50 feet collapsed while six workers were at the construction site.
Two of the workers, Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive. Four others — Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30 — were rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead.
The six workers were evacuated to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before being handed over to the police.
In the second incident at Kurna, an Islamic school building known as Khadija Idris Bala collapsed behind a primary school, trapping nine students.
Eight of the students, aged between 12 and 15, were rescued alive, while 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad was brought out unconscious and later confirmed dead.
The Kano State Fire Service said the causes of both collapses were still under investigation.
The agency urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to comply with approved building standards and safety measures, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent further loss of lives.
