King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and once recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34.
Gatekeepers News reports that his death was announced on Friday by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described it as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of Tooro. King Oyo reportedly died at about 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at just three years old following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was subsequently crowned as an adult at the age of 18 in 2010 and became the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom. Guinness World Records recognised him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
The Tooro Kingdom has not disclosed the cause of his death. However, Ugandan government officials said he had been critically ill and receiving medical treatment in the United States before his death.
Although Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, the country retains several traditional kingdoms whose rulers have no formal political authority but wield considerable cultural and social influence. King Oyo presided over the Tooro Kingdom, which has more than two million people.
During his reign, King Oyo was associated with youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness. He also championed efforts aimed at modernising the kingdom while preserving its cultural heritage.
The Tooro Kingdom said King Oyo was unmarried but left behind a son who will serve as heir. The kingdom’s prime minister assured the people that the continuity of the crown was secured, although details of the succession will be announced in line with Tooro customs and traditions.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief in Uganda, with political leaders, cultural institutions and members of the public paying tribute to the young monarch. Opposition figure Bobi Wine also expressed condolences following the announcement.
