The House of Representatives has approved the extension of the implementation of the capital component of Nigeria’s 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that the extension was approved during plenary on Tuesday following a motion moved by Julius Ihonvbere, the House Majority Leader.
Ihonvbere said the capital component of the 2025 budget had not been fully implemented due to economic difficulties.
The latest decision represents another extension of the deadline for executing projects and programmes contained in the 2025 capital budget. In June, the House had approved an extension from June 30 to September 30, following a similar decision by the Senate.
The 2025 capital budget had earlier been extended from March 31 to June 30 after the National Assembly approved changes to the implementation timeline. In December 2025, lawmakers had initially extended the capital component to March 31, 2026, following President Bola Tinubu’s request.
The federal government had previously disclosed that only about ₦3.10 trillion, representing 17.7 percent of the 2025 capital budget, had been released as of the third quarter of 2025. The government attributed the relatively low release partly to efforts to complete priority projects from the 2024 budget.
