A female member of the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP) on Monday said her position has continued to inspire other young women to pursue leadership opportunities, build confidence, and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
Gatekeepers News reports thatn Mrs Fatima Bukar Lamisula, one of the three youth parliamentarians from Borno State, also called for increased participation of women in governance, urging young women to embrace leadership opportunities and contribute to national development.
This was disclosed shortly a press conference by the Nigerian Youth Parliament in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Borno State to commence stakeholder consultations toward developing the Borno State Media Action Plan 2027–2031.
According to Mrs Lamisula, the meeting is aimed at translating stakeholders’ experiences, evidence, and proposed solutions into practical strategies for the implementation of the five-year Media Action Plan.
The parliamentarian said the role of women in leadership cannot be overemphasised, noting that young women must be encouraged noting that women’s voices and perspectives are essential to building an inclusive society and addressing the challenges facing communities.
“As part of my commitment to encouraging women to seek leadership positions, I was recently appointed to the Women Affairs Committee of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, where I continue to advocate for greater representation, inclusion, and meaningful participation of women in governance.
“In my interactions with young women, I realised that some of the barriers to women’s inclusion in leadership are rooted in long-standing stereotypes. Attention is now being channelled towards addressing these stereotypes and creating more opportunities for women to participate in leadership.” The Paliamentarian said
On the Borno State Media Action Plan 2027–2031, Lamisula therefore stated that Nigeria Youth Parliament sees the media as one of the ” key partners in making it work. We need journalists and media organisations to help us take this conversation beyond this room to communities, local governments, young people and ordinary citizens.
” We want this to become a conversation that people across Borno can participate in.At the end of the consultation, we hope to have a practical Borno State Media Action Plan for 2027–2031 that reflects our realities and provides clear actions for a more informed and resilient society.Let me end by saying this:
” We cannot build the Borno we want with an information environment that works against us.If we want development to move faster, if we want stronger communities, if we want citizens to participate meaningfully, then we must also build a society that values accurate information
