Twenty people have been killed and five others injured in a multiple-vehicle road crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Gatekeepers News reports that Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the crash occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, at about 3:32pm after Sopp Water Falls along the Hawan Kibo axis.
According to FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 23 males and two females. Twenty males died, while three males and two females sustained injuries.
Four vehicles were involved in the crash: a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN, a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M, a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Yankari Express, and a motorcycle whose registration details were unavailable.
FRSC said preliminary findings indicated that brake failure and subsequent loss of control were suspected causes of the accident.
The injured victims were evacuated to Riyom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at the mortuary of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
FRSC said its rescue personnel also cleared the obstruction caused by the crash and restored traffic along the affected section of the highway.
Plateau State Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, separately confirmed the crash and attributed it to brake failure. He urged motorists to properly inspect their vehicles before travelling and exercise caution when negotiating bends and steep sections of roads.
The impact caused the Hummer bus to catch fire, with 18 passengers reportedly trapped inside and killed, while two other people on a motorcycle also died.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed directed the crash investigation team to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the reported brake failure and loss of control.
