The woman diagnosed with Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory is a diplomat whose condition has worsened to multi-organ failure, an official disclosed during an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the official did not reveal the patient’s nationality.
At the meeting, Olajumoke Babatunde, director of public health laboratory services at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), confirmed that testing identified the Bundibugyo strain.
“We did three levels of tests, but all were molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” Babatunde said.
The update follows Tuesday’s announcement by Health Minister Ali Pate that a woman who arrived on an international flight from Uganda had tested positive for Ebola.
She received treatment at a private hospital in Abuja for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. Pate said she was receiving care in isolation.
Authorities have identified 44 close contacts for tracing, while investigating other possible exposures.
The NCDC, federal health ministry and FCT health authorities are coordinating containment efforts.
