United States Mission in Nigeria has issued health guidance to American citizens following the federal government’s confirmation of an Ebola case.

Gatekeepers News reports that the mission published the advisory on Wednesday, noting that Nigerian health authorities were tracing contacts of the infected person.

It advised anyone with possible exposure who develops symptoms associated with Ebola to contact a healthcare provider for instructions before visiting a medical facility.

“Monitor your health for 21 days following travel to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak,” the mission said.

The advisory also urged travellers to continue taking malaria prevention medication as prescribed by their doctors, explaining that malaria symptoms can resemble those of Ebola.

American citizens were directed to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website for information about the disease and travel health guidance for Nigeria.

The mission further encouraged travellers to check their insurance policies for medical evacuation arrangements should they become ill overseas.
