Students of University of Ibadan (UI), Oyonetate are currently protesting over introduction of a 10-hour daily electricity supply within the campus.
Gatekeepers News reports that the institution, through a memo issued by its Department of Works and Maintenance, introduced a 10-hour daily electricity supply with effect from Tuesday.
The memo which is dated 16th July, 2024 and titled “An Injustice to one is an injustice to all” was signed by Director of Works, Engineer O.A. Adetolu.
The letter reads, “Effective immediately, the Vice-Chancellor has approved 10-hour daily electricity supply on Campus as follows: 1. Day Time: 08 a.m. 02 p.m. (6 hours) 2. Night Time: 10 p.m. 02 a.m. (4 hours) Kindly adhere strictly to the approved schedule. Thank you.”
There is outrage, currently, within the campus, as students in large numbers on Wednesday morning, came out to protest over the rationale of electricity distribution amid alleged outrageous increment in school fees among other things.
The school’s student union, through a release on Tuesday, announced that there would neither be a lecture nor transportation within the school premises on Wednesday, as the mass action which began yesterday, will continue by 4 am.
Stating that three students who embarked on a peaceful protest on the 13th of May were victimised, the union further called for an end to victimisation.
