On Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a concession speech in which she communicated to President-elect Donald Trump her commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
Gatekeepers News reports that Trump, the Republican candidate, was officially announced as the winner of the presidency by The Associated Press (AP) early Wednesday morning after surpassing the necessary 270 Electoral College votes.
“We must accept the results of this election,” Harris said from the stage at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
She continued, “Earlier today, I spoke with President Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I told him that we will help him and his team with that transition, and we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power. A fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results. That principle, as much as any other, distinguishes democracy from monarchy or tyranny. And anyone who seeks the public trust must honor it.”
Following news of Harris’ phone call to Trump, a representative for the president-elect posted a message on his official website saying the two “agreed on the importance of unifying the country.”
“President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today where she congratulated him on his historic victory,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.
“President Trump acknowledged Vice President Harris on her strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country.”
