South Korea’s Ministry of Justice announced on Monday that President Yoon Suk Yeol has been prohibited from leaving the country.
Gatekeepers News reports that this decision comes shortly after Yoon briefly imposed martial law, which led to significant turmoil within the nation.
On December 3, he deployed special forces and helicopters to parliament, but lawmakers swiftly rejected his decree, forcing him to rescind the order.
In a dramatic turn of events, Yoon narrowly avoided an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday. Meanwhile, large crowds gathered in freezing conditions, calling for his removal from office. Despite remaining in his position, Yoon is facing increasing scrutiny, with investigations targeting him and his close associates for alleged insurrection.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Yoon is the first sitting president in South Korea to be subjected to a travel ban.
Also, former Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently in detention, and ex-Interior Minister Lee Sang-min are also under travel restrictions due to their involvement in the recent events.
