Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, urging him to visit the Port Harcourt refinery to assess its operational status.

Gatekeepers News reports that the invitation comes in response to Obasanjo’s recent comments implying that the state-owned refineries remain inactive, despite significant investments made to revitalize them.

During his presidency, Obasanjo noted that discussions were held with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) regarding the management of Nigeria’s refineries. However, Shell ultimately declined the opportunity, citing concerns regarding systemic corruption within the industry.

Additionally, Obasanjo has accused the NNPC of providing misleading information to the public about the operational capabilities of the refineries.

In light of these statements, NNPC’s chief corporate communications officer, Olufemi Soneye, has publicly invited Obasanjo to visit the Port Harcourt facility.

Soneye emphasised the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability and encouraged collaboration with the former president to enhance Nigeria’s energy security.

“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance, which will always be welcomed and cherished.

“Additionally, we warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries and witness firsthand the progress made under the leadership of NNPC Limited.

“We remain grateful for his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and are committed to building a brighter, more prosperous future for our nation. Together, we can continue to ensure energy security and deliver sustainable value to all Nigerians,” NNPCL stated.
