Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit conducted an early morning raid in Victoria Island, resulting in the arrest of 49 individuals.
Gatekeepers News reports that the operation, which commenced around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was led by Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele.
Targeting areas such as Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and surrounding neighbourhoods known for illegal activities, the raid was launched in response to complaints and tips from local residents. Among those arrested, 48 were men and one was a woman.
He explained that the goal was to clear out criminals like street thugs and pickpockets disturbing the peace in the area.
“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law.
“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos,” he said.
He added that the task force now carries out enforcement operations at least three times a week to deal with illegal settlements and crime hotspots.
“The 49 suspects apprehended have been duly charged to court in line with the laws of Lagos State,” Akerele said.
He also stressed the task force’s mission to keep Lagos clean, peaceful, and safe for all residents.
