2027 Election: Tinubu – Obi – Sowore Sign Peace Accord

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi and Omoyele Sowore, alongside other presidential candidates and political leaders, have signed the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gatekeepers News reports that the accord was signed on Tuesday in Abuja under the auspices of the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, and in partnership with The Kukah Centre. The ceremony came a day before the official commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Tinubu was represented at the event by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who delivered the President’s remarks. Akume commended the National Peace Committee for sustaining its peace initiative since 2014 and urged political actors to place the interests of Nigeria above personal ambitions.

Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and Sowore of the African Action Congress were among the candidates who signed the accord. Other political leaders and presidential candidates also participated in the ceremony, which was attended by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan and national chairmen of political parties.

The agreement commits political parties, candidates and their supporters to peaceful and issue-based campaigns while rejecting violence, hate speech, personal attacks, misinformation and ethnic or religious incitement.

The National Peace Committee said the accord was intended to promote a peaceful electoral process and encourage political actors to respect democratic institutions as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
