Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has congratulated the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, on his victory at the Supreme Court, which further affirmed his election as the duly elected Governor of Edo State.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a unanimous judgement delivered on Thursday, a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba dismissed the appeal filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Justice Garba ruled that the appellant failed to present credible evidence proving that Okpebholo did not secure valid votes during the election.
“It’s a confirmation of your victory at the polls, where the good people of Edo State had overwhelmingly voted for you as their governor.
“A victory that the Governorship Election Tribunal, the Court of Appeal and now the Supreme Court have stamped their judicial authorities on,” Gov Aliyu said in a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, on Friday.
Governor Aliyu described the Supreme Court’s judgment as a victory not only for the people of Edo State but for democracy in Nigeria as a whole.
He stated that the dismissal of Ighodalo’s appeal by the apex court, for lacking merit, demonstrates to the world that the Nigerian judiciary is truly independent and committed to upholding justice.
“On behalf of the good people of Sokoto State, I congratulate my colleague and brother, Governor Monday Okpebholo, on this well-deserved victory,” Governor Aliyu said.
“This is a victory for the entire APC family and for all well-meaning Nigerians,” he added.
Governor Aliyu urged Governor Okpebholo to remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to all corners of Edo State.
He wished him a rewarding and successful tenure in office.
