Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and founder of the Dangote Group, has submitted paperwork to build Nigeria’s largest seaport in Ogun State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the planned deep seaport, located in Olokola, Ogun State, will boost the group’s export capacity and strengthen its logistics operations.
According to Dangote, the seaport will be “the biggest, deepest port in Nigeria.”
The project aims to provide an integrated logistics solution for the group’s growing operations, including fertiliser and oil refinery plants.
“We want to do a major project to bring in more gas than what NLNG is doing today,” Dangote said, referencing Nigeria LNG Ltd., the country’s top LNG exporter. “We know where there is a lot of gas, so we’ll run a pipeline all the way and bring it to the shore.”
The Dangote Group already exports fertilizer and urea through a private jetty built near its refinery site.
The proposed port will likely compete with existing infrastructure like the Chinese-funded Lekki Deep Sea Port, which began operations in 2023.
Dangote’s vision for the seaport is part of his broader ambition to transform Africa into a major industrial hub.
He recently remarked that Africa could be transformed into a “heaven” in just five years and announced that the Dangote Group is on track to generate $30 billion in revenue by next year.
The billionaire also aims to surpass Qatar to make Nigeria the world’s largest urea exporter within four years.
