Nigerian Senate will hold a special session on Wednesday to pay tribute to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the decision was made on Tuesday, following a motion moved by Senator Gbenga Daniel.

The Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, announced that the special session would be held to honour the late president.

“By the grace of God, tomorrow, Wednesday, this senate will be taking a special motion, as well, to honour the late President Muhammadu Buhari, and distinguished colleagues will also have a chance to make contributions in that regard,” Bamidele said.

The Senate observed a minute of silence earlier in memory of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died hours after the announcement of Buhari’s death. Bamidele noted that the country lost two eminent citizens on the same day.

Buhari served as head of state between 1983 and 1985, and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

He was buried at his residence in Daura, Katsina state, on Tuesday.
