Legacy FM, a privately-owned radio station in Ebonyi state, has lifted the suspension on its acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, effective August 12, 2025.

Gatekeepers News reports that the suspension was imposed recently due to Chikwere’s persistent criticism of Ebonyi state Governor Francis Nwifuru, which the station deemed as unruly behaviour and a breach of its code of conduct.

The management of Legacy FM had stated, “The management of Legacy FM 95.1, The Sound of Now, hereby suspends the acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, with immediate effect, till further notice. This is due to unruly behaviour and disobedience to the code of conduct guiding the Legacy FM.”

However, in a new development, the management has directed Chikwere to resume work with immediate effect. The reason behind the lifting of the suspension was not explicitly stated.

The suspension and subsequent lifting of the suspension come amid concerns over rising attacks and interference against broadcasters nationwide. Ayo Makinde, chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), expressed worry over the trend, warning that it hinders public trust, citizen participation in governance, and national development.

Makinde described the trend as a “dangerous threat to constitutional freedoms” and cited recent incidents, including Niger state Governor Umar Bago’s directive to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1 and the suspension of Chikwere by Legacy FM.
