Captain of Nigeria’s women’s national football team, Rasheedat Ajibade, has disclosed that the team is yet to receive the $100,000 reward promised by President Bola Tinubu following their victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Gatekeepers News reports that Ajibade, in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, said “We have not received our money, but hopefully, it will be paid. They have not paid all the promises. We have not received anything.”
The President had announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew, as well as a three-bedroom apartment for each player in the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja. Additionally, the team members and technical crew were conferred with national honors of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Despite the delay, Ajibade expressed optimism that the government would fulfill its promises to the team.
The Super Falcons made history by clinching their record-extending 10th WAFCON title, coming from behind to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final.
