Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a supplementary election for Kaura Namoda South constituency in Zamfara State on August 21.

Gatekeepers News reports that Mahmood Isah, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), disclosed this on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau.

Isah noted that the rerun would be held in five polling units spread across Kyambarawa and Sakajiki wards.

According to him, three polling units in Kyambarawa — Shiyar Magaji (Kofar Hamza) 002, Tukasu (Sabuwar Kasuwa) 009, and Kofar Fafa (Shiyar Fada) — are affected, while two others in Sakajiki — Alko (Shiyar Kudu) 002 and Shiyar Nufawa (Kofar MD Nuhu) 007 — will also take part in the exercise.

Isah explained that the August 16 by-election in the constituency was declared inconclusive after results from the affected areas were cancelled due to alleged irregularities.

Lawal Sa’adu, the returning officer, said the cancellation covered 5,446 registered voters, with 3,265 permanent voter cards (PVCs) already collected.

He noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 7,001 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 5,339 — a margin of 1,662 votes.

Citing sections 24(2 & 3), 47(3), and 51(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, Sa’adu explained that a supplementary election is required when the margin of lead is smaller than the number of collected PVCs in cancelled polling units.
