Ahuja Bello, the renowned Nigerian Juju singer, guitarist, and vocalist, has died at the age of 83.
Gatekeepers News reports that he passed away in the early hours of Monday, just a day after celebrating his birthday.
His daughter, Festus Aderemi, confirmed his demise in a heartfelt Facebook post, writing, “Rest in peace my lovely dad, Alhaji Ahuja Bello. We love you but God loves you more.”
Ahuja Bello was born Ismaila Dele Bello on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State. He began his music career as an electronic technician before forming Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band in 1976. With his vibrant style and energetic performances, he carved a niche for himself in Nigeria’s music scene.
Some of his notable albums include ‘Awa Ti Danfo’ and ‘Ariya Ti De’, while popular songs like ‘Ijo Olomo’, ‘Fellow Nigerians’, and ‘Victory’ showcased his artistry. Interestingly, Bello reportedly befriended reggae icon Bob Marley during a recording session in London in 1979.
Despite a tragic accident in 1982 that cut his career short, Ahuja Bello remained a respected figure in the Juju music scene, influencing a generation of Nigerian musicians.
His band, Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles, paid tribute to him on Facebook, saying, “Though you are gone, your light continues to shine in our hearts. RIP Ahuja Bello.”
