The Appeal of Conscience Foundation has named Tony Elumelu, chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, as recipients of its 2025 Appeal of Conscience Award.
Gatekeepers News reports that the foundation, established in 1965 by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, is an interfaith coalition bringing together business, diplomatic, and religious leaders to promote peace, religious liberty, and respect for diversity.
The honour is reserved for public figures who demonstrate enlightened leadership and uphold the principle that a crime committed in the name of religion is the greatest crime against religion.
Speaking on the choice of honourees, Schneier said, “Tony Elumelu stands as a beacon of ethical entrepreneurship and visionary leadership. Business can be a powerful force for peace, stability, and human dignity. His commitment to uplifting others is a living example of conscience in action.”
Elumelu, in his acceptance remarks, described the recognition as moving and profoundly meaningful while reaffirming his belief in leadership as service.
He said, “Our shared commitment to peace, mutual respect, and the sacred value of every human life binds us across faith lines and inspires me daily in my work. May our united voices for justice and understanding continue to echo in a world so deeply in need of both.”
Schneier also lauded Dolan for his dedication to unity and faith-driven service. He said, “My dear friend, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, endowed with wisdom, vision, and compassion, has earned the trust and respect of people in New York and across the nation.”
“Cardinal Dolan is a steadfast leader in our fractured world, inspiring people of all faiths to seek unity over division. He is a blessing in our midst, well deserving of appreciation for his valuable contribution to the work of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.”
The 60th annual gala, where the awards will be presented, is scheduled to take place on September 29 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The ceremony will be chaired by Brian Moynihan, chairperson and CEO of Bank of America.
