Lagos State Police Command has arrested 28-year-old John Samuel, a suspected armed robber and hired assassin, in connection with the robbery and shooting of businessman Gbenga Obama.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to a police statement by the command on Saturday, Obama was attacked in broad daylight on August 18 along Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja.
The assailant allegedly shot him and made away with his gold necklace and other valuables. The police disclosed that Samuel was tracked to his hideout in Epe and arrested at about 2 p.m. on September 19.
The statement reads, “John Samuel is an ex-convict known for his viciousness in armed robbery, assassination, and murder of some of his victims. He was released recently after serving a six-year jail term for capital offence of armed robbery.”
“After his release from prison, he returned to crime and criminality with even more viciousness. He is notorious for shooting at victims before dispossessing them of their valuables.”
CCTV footage obtained from the August 18 attack reportedly captured the moment Samuel shot at Obama with an English pistol before snatching the jewellery, while an accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their escape.
The businessman sustained serious gunshot injuries but has since been treated and discharged.
The police added that Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewellery for N4 million far below its actual value. Efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang, who will face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, warned criminals to steer clear of the state. He said, “Lagos has no hiding place for criminals. We urge residents to continue their lawful activities without fear.”
