Cristiano Ronaldo continued to make football history on Tuesday, becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying matches as Portugal drew 2–2 with Hungary.
Gatekeepers News reports that the 40-year-old forward struck twice in the first half, taking his tally in World Cup qualifiers to 41 goals, surpassing Guatemala legend Carlos Ruiz, who scored 39 between 1998 and 2016.
Ronaldo pulled Portugal level in the 22nd minute, finishing from a Nelson Semedo cross, before converting again just before halftime after being set up by Nuno Mendes to give Roberto Martínez’s side a 2–1 lead.
Portugal appeared on course to seal qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time equaliser for Hungary delayed their celebrations.
Already the all-time top international goalscorer with 143 goals, Ronaldo is now chasing another milestone — becoming the first player to feature in six World Cups.
