Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Federal Capital Territory has dismissed reports alleging that women in custody are left without menstrual hygiene supplies.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the Command spokesperson, DSC Adamu Samson Duza, said the Service complies with national regulations and global correctional standards.

According to him, sanitary pads and hygiene materials are distributed to female inmates every month at no cost, and each allocation is recorded in welfare registers.

He explained that every women custodial facility has a functional clinic run by trained medical personnel who handle routine health needs, including menstruation-related concerns.

Duza added that inmates are given access to consultations, medication, and referrals for specialised treatment when necessary.

He also highlighted the role of external partners, noting that civil society groups, faith-based bodies, and development organisations regularly contribute sanitary products and conduct menstrual-health sensitisation programmes.

The DSC added that a recent donation from the Nigerian Medical Association is one of several aimed at improving welfare.

The statement was prompted by a report from The ICIR, which documented shortages of menstrual products in some centres, including accounts from inmates who said they had resorted to makeshift alternatives such as cotton wool and newspapers.
