A coalition of lawmakers under the banner of “House to the Rescue” has demanded the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Gatekeepers News reports that the lawmakers accused Tinubu’s administration of failing to protect Nigerians from escalating violence, mass abductions and persistent terror attacks by armed groups.
In a statement, the lawmakers said insecurity has reached unprecedented levels nationwide, alleging that the government has abandoned its most fundamental responsibility, which is to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens.
Citing records from civil society organisations, they alleged that more than 10,000 Nigerians have been killed by insurgents, terrorists, bandits, and other armed groups since the beginning of Tinubu’s tenure.
According to the figures quoted in the statement, 3,841 people were killed in 2023 alone, while between May 2024 and May 2025, 6,549 Nigerians lost their lives, with many more suffering injuries, sexual violence, displacement, and long-term trauma.
The lawmakers also alleged that kidnapping has surged dramatically, with 3,620 people abducted in the president’s first year and another 3,804 kidnapped between May 2024 and May 2025.
They added that terror groups and kidnappers have demanded and received billions of naira in ransom payments, a trend that has further fuelled insecurity and strengthened criminal networks.
Referring to reports by Amnesty International and other monitoring bodies, the lawmakers described the situation as a damning indictment of the current administration.
The statement cited the recent abduction of schoolchildren, the killing of security operatives, and the murder of Brigadier General U. A. Uba by ISWAP as painful evidence of a government that has lost control and become disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary citizens. They offered prayers for the victims, saying, “May their souls be blessed. Ameen.”
The lawmakers criticised the alleged insensitive political rhetoric in the face of nationwide suffering, arguing that Nigerians continue to endure fear, grief, and hardship while leadership fails to respond with urgency or compassion.
They further stated that President Tinubu has “lost the moral, ethical and constitutional legitimacy to remain in office”.
Their demands include immediate resignation of the president, suspension of all federal capital projects so resources can be redirected to nationwide security operations, and convening of a national emergency summit to address the worsening crisis.
They insisted that the country cannot continue on this path of bloodshed, impunity, and national collapse, stressing that Nigerians deserve leadership that values their lives and responds to their suffering.
The statement was signed by Hon. Muhammed Musa Soba (North West), Hon. Zakari Mohammed (North Central), Hon. Olasupo Abiodun (South West), Hon. Sadiq Ibrahim (North East), Hon. Uko Nkole (South East), and Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa (South South).
