Four people were reportedly injured on Wednesday after a truck transporting bags of onions struck an improvised explosive device (IED) at Lingir Village in Guzamala LGA of Borno State.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region, reported that the truck was travelling from Baga in Kukawa LGA to Maiduguri when the explosive detonated around 10:30 am.

The blast injured the driver, 25-year-old Umar Isah, along with three passengers identified as Suleiman Isa, 22; Ibrahim Bala, 25; and Umar Hassan, 22 — all residents of Maiduguri.

The truck, registered as XA 504 GSH (Yobe), was said to have sustained significant damage in the explosion.

Makama said troops of Operation HADIN KAI and other security operatives swiftly responded to the scene, cordoning off the area, taking photographs, and conducting a search for more explosive devices. No additional IEDs were found.

The victims were evacuated to a hospital in Maiduguri, where they are reportedly responding to treatment.

The attack is suspected to have been carried out by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Wednesday’s incident comes just four days after an IED explosion behind the Banki motor park in Bama LGA killed four children and injured another.
