Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has closed the headquarters of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) in Lagos after accusing the firm of failing to comply with a regulatory order meant to protect consumers ’ rights.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to a statement issued on Thursday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had earlier directed IKEDC to split a single maximum-demand account into twenty separate non-maximum-demand accounts.

The move was meant to treat nineteen residential units and the complainant’s service point as individual customers, each entitled to proper metering and connection.

The commission said the company ignored the directive. As a result, the affected customer has been without electricity for more than two years despite fulfilling all payments and requirements, leaving the nineteen residential units unusable.

The FCCPC explained that sealing the facility came only after several failed attempts to secure voluntary compliance. It said the company received clear instructions in April 2025 on what steps to take, followed by a Compliance Notice on October 2 demanding full implementation within seven working days, but no action was taken.

Bola Adeyinka, director of surveillance and investigation at the FCCPC, said the enforcement was in line with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.

She said, “Sealing this facility is a proportionate enforcement measure taken only after repeated engagement and several opportunities for voluntary compliance.”

The commission added that the seal will remain until the company complies with directives from both NERC and the FCCPC and submits written proof.
