Veteran Nigerian winger Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football at age 33, bringing to a close a remarkable 15‑year journey with the Super Eagles.
Gatekeepers News reports that Musa, who holds the record for the most caps in Nigerian football history with 111 appearances, confirmed his decision in an emotional post on social media on Wednesday.
The former Super-Eagles captain expressed gratitude to fans, teammates, and football officials for their support.
He reflected on his international career, which began as a teenager when he was called up simultaneously to Nigeria’s U‑20, U‑23, and senior teams—a testament to his early talent and dedication.
Musa said that wearing the green and white jersey meant everything to him and emphasised that representing Nigeria was always a source of pride.
His time with the national team was marked by several historic milestones. He was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
He also left his mark on the FIFA World Cup, scoring four goals across multiple tournaments including two memorable strikes against Argentina in 2014 and a brace against Iceland in 2018, making him Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history.
His leadership extended beyond scoring and appearances; as captain, Musa was widely respected for his commitment to helping younger players and embodying the spirit of the team.
The announcement came shortly after Musa’s omission from recent national team selections, underscoring a transition period for Nigeria’s senior squad following the retirements of other senior figures like William Troost‑Ekong.
Musa’s legacy as a Super Eagles legend, marked by record caps, memorable goals, and devoted service to Nigerian football, cements his place among the country’s most celebrated players.
