Nigerian soldiers earlier detained in Burkina Faso have arrived safely at an Air Force base in Accra, Ghana, following diplomatic engagements between both countries.
Gatekeepers News reports that Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, confirmed the development in a post shared on X on Friday evening.
He wrote, “ I can confirm that the pilots and crew of NAF C-130 (913) have safely arrived at the Air Force Base in Accra. The successful outcome reflects Nigeria’s commitment to diplomacy, regional cooperation, and the leadership of @NGRPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR @officialABAL, in resolving sensitive matters through dialogue.”
The Nigerian Air Force personnel were detained after their aircraft made a precautionary landing in Burkina Faso.
Nigerian authorities, however, maintained that the landing was prompted by a technical concern and carried out in line with international aviation safety procedures.
The soldiers were released on Wednesday after President Bola Ahned Tinubu dispatched a high-level delegation led by Tuggar to engage Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré.
Talks held in Ouagadougou resolved the matter amicably, with both sides reaffirming commitments to dialogue and regional cooperation.
According to the foreign ministry, discussions also focused on strengthening political, security, and economic ties, as well as improving coordinated responses to security challenges across the Sahel and West African region.
