Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced 41 properties valued at about N212 billion to Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice.
Gatekeepers News reports that investigators said the assets, which include universities, schools, hotels, residential buildings, factories, land, and media facilities, are located across Kebbi State, Kano State, and Federal Capital Territory. The commission noted that most of the properties are concentrated in Kebbi State, with others spread across Kano and Abuja.
In Kebbi State, EFCC traced several education-related assets, including multiple sites belonging to Rayhaan University, comprising a permanent site, a temporary site, a third site, and a vice chancellor’s residence.
Also linked to the former minister are Rayhaan Model Academy, Rayhaan Primary and Secondary School, and other educational facilities. The commission also identified Rayhaan Agro-Allied factory buildings, factory machines, a factory mosque, staff quarters, a printing press, a radio station, and various commercial and support structures connected to Rayhaan-related businesses.
The investigation further linked Malami to hospitality and commercial properties in Kebbi, including Azbir Hotel, alongside associated facilities such as a gallery, gardens, mosque, clothing outlet, pharmacy, and supermarket.
Several residential buildings were also traced to him and members of his family, including multiple personal residences, houses linked to his sons, foundation buildings, security houses, and an uncompleted multi-storey complex within the state.
In Kano State, EFCC identified hotel and leisure facilities allegedly connected to Malami, including Zeennoor Hotel, its mosque, and an older hotel structure. Other assets traced to Kano include Rayhaan Hotel, a gym facility, and a residential property said to belong to his wife along Ahmadu Bello Way.
In Abuja, properties linked to the former Attorney-General include a luxury duplex in Maitama, two branches of Meethaq Hotel located in Jabi and Maitama, multiple bungalow units at Efab Estate, and Harmonia Hotels situated in Area 11, Garki.
The asset tracing is coming amid a 16-count money laundering charge filed by the federal government against Malami and his son, Abdulaziz Malami.
The charges allege violations of sections of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, relating to the alleged concealment and movement of funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
According to reports, EFCC relied on corporate records, property documents, and financial trails in linking the assets to the former minister.
The commission is expected to present the property findings as part of its evidence when the case comes up before the Federal High Court in Abuja, while investigations into the assets are still ongoing.
