Nigeria was plunged into widespread darkness on Sunday afternoon after the national electricity grid collapsed, causing power supply across the country to drop sharply.

Gatekeepers News reports that data from the national grid showed that as of 3:12pm on December 29, 2025, only 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity was available nationwide.

At the time, only Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company received 30MW, while Abuja DisCo got 20MW. All other distribution companies were allocated zero power.

Electricity firms affected by the outage include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola DisCos, leaving many homes, businesses and public facilities without electricity.

The collapse was confirmed by grid operators, who said efforts were ongoing to restore supply. However, no detailed explanation had been given on the exact cause of the system failure at the time of reporting.

The incident adds to the long list of grid collapses recorded in recent years, highlighting ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power transmission and distribution system.
