Danish PM Warns Trump Over Greenland Remarks

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has cautioned former US President Donald Trump to stop making comments about taking control of Greenland, describing such statements as unacceptable.

Gatekeepers News reports that Frederiksen said it was wrong to suggest that the United States needs to take over Greenland, stressing that the US has no right to annex any part of the Danish kingdom.

She said Denmark and Greenland are covered by Nato’s collective security and already maintain defence cooperation with the United States.

Her response followed a social media post by Katie Miller, wife of Trump ally Stephen Miller, who shared an image of Greenland in the colours of the US flag with the word “SOON,” fuelling fresh debate over Trump’s long-standing interest in the Arctic island.

In a statement published on the Danish government’s website, Frederiksen said she was speaking to Washington very directly, noting that Denmark has increased security investments in the Arctic and already allows US military access to Greenland under existing agreements.

She said, “I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have very clearly said that they are not for sale.”

The Danish ambassador to the US had earlier responded to the online post with what he described as a friendly reminder that both countries are allies, adding that Denmark expects respect for its territorial integrity.

Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources make it vital to US security, and has previously refused to rule out the use of force to gain control of the island.

His administration’s decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland had earlier drawn criticism from Danish officials.
