Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian Governor of Ogun State, has died at the age of 100.
Gatekeepers News reports that the passing of the centenarian was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo. She said Madam Onabanjo died on Monday, January 11, 2026.
The statement reads, “The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.”
“Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11. We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
Madam Onabanjo was born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and later moved to Lagos as a child, where she received her early education. She trained as a teacher at a Teachers’ Training College in Yaba and worked in the education sector for over two decades before retiring.
She was married to the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Ogun State Governor from 1979 to 1983 during the Second Republic. Their marriage produced four children, although one daughter died earlier.
Despite her husband’s political status, she was known for living a modest life and was widely respected for her discipline, faith, and commitment to family values. She was also a prominent member of St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral in Ijebu-Ode, where she served as the Iya Ijo.
