New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dissociated itself from a planned nationwide protest targeting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), scheduled for Tuesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the party said the demonstration, which was reported to involve marches to INEC headquarters in Abuja and other state offices, is unauthorised and organised by former members.
In a statement on Monday, Ladipo Johnson, NNPP national publicity secretary, described the protest as illegal and claimed the organisers had been expelled from the party, citing a Federal High Court judgment (FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2024) delivered on April 18, 2024, by Justice Emeka Nwite. The court affirmed the expulsion of the individuals behind the demonstration, and they have not appealed the ruling.
“The persons behind this illegal protest are not members of the party as established by the Federal High Court. Up till today, they have not appealed the judgment, but instead engage in forum shopping looking for orders that have no foundations in law,” the statement said.
The party accused the protest organisers of withholding facts from courts and using tactics that fail once full details are revealed, stressing that the NNPP has no involvement in the planned action. Members were urged to remain calm and ignore provocations meant to distract the party from its objectives.
NNPP also called on security agencies to monitor the situation and prevent potential disruptions, emphasizing that the party continues to focus on its political agenda and lawful activities nationwide.
