Manchester City produced a dramatic late comeback to beat Liverpool 2–1 at Anfield on Sunday, keeping their chase for a fourth straight Premier League title very much alive and reducing Arsenal’s lead at the top to six points.
Gatekeepers News reports that Liverpool looked set to claim a crucial victory after Dominik Szoboszlai fired a brilliant long-range free kick into the top corner in the 74th minute, sending the home crowd into celebration and putting pressure on Manchester City to respond.
However, City, who were second in the table before the match, launched a late fightback. Bernardo Silva’s well-timed volley in the 84th minute restored parity, and deep into stoppage time, Erling Haaland converted a penalty after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes, giving City the win. Haaland, booked for celebrating in front of Liverpool fans, once again proved his knack for scoring decisive goals in critical matches.
The closing moments were filled with controversy. Szoboszlai was shown a red card in the 13th minute of added time after a VAR review overturned a potential City goal, awarding a free kick and a sending-off for denying a clear scoring opportunity. Despite the chaos, City held on to claim a rare victory at Anfield — only Pep Guardiola’s second win there as City manager and his first in front of the crowd.
The win leaves City six points behind league leaders Arsenal, maintaining pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side as the title race enters its final weeks. Liverpool, now sixth, were left frustrated after losing control of a game they had largely dominated.
“This keeps everything alive,” a City official said after the match, highlighting the team’s resilience in high-pressure moments. With 13 games left in the season, the Premier League title race promises a tense finish, with Manchester City determined to close the gap and Arsenal aiming to maintain their advantage.
