Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has warned that electricity generation in some parts of the country may be affected as Seplat Energy Plc begins a four-day routine maintenance exercise on its gas production facilities.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Andy Odeh, NNPC said the maintenance will take place from February 12 to February 15 and will impact gas supply into NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company pipeline network. Seplat is a major gas supplier to the network, which feeds several power generation companies across Nigeria.
The company explained that the maintenance exercise is part of standard industry procedures aimed at ensuring safety, protecting critical assets, and maintaining the long-term efficiency and reliability of gas production and transportation systems.
“This planned activity forms part of standard industry safety and asset integrity protocols designed to ensure the continued reliability, efficiency, and safe operation of critical gas infrastructure,” NNPC said.
According to the company, regular maintenance is necessary to keep the system running smoothly, strengthen operational stability, and prevent unexpected breakdowns that could lead to wider disruptions in gas supply and electricity generation.
During the four-day maintenance period, NNPC said gas flow into the NGIC pipeline network will reduce temporarily. As a result, some power generation companies that depend on this supply may face limited gas availability, which could slightly affect electricity output within the period.
“Periodic maintenance of this nature is essential to sustain optimal system performance, strengthen operational resilience, and minimise the risk of unplanned outages,” the statement added.
NNPC said it is working closely with Seplat Energy to ensure that the maintenance is completed safely and within the scheduled timeframe. In addition, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited is engaging alternative gas suppliers to reduce supply gaps and maintain stability across the gas network.
“NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are working closely to ensure that the maintenance is executed safely and completed as scheduled,” the company said.
“Upon completion of the maintenance exercise, full gas supply into the NGIC system is expected to resume promptly, enabling affected power generation companies to return to normal operations.”
The company added that further updates will be provided when necessary, reassuring Nigerians of its commitment to ensuring a stable energy supply, improving power generation, and strengthening national energy security.
