President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the revival of Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival after a six-year break reflects the return of peace, stability, and normalcy across Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State.
Gatekeepers News reports that speaking as the special guest of honour at the grand finale of the 61st edition of the festival in Argungu, the president described the historic event, which has spanned more than 83 years, as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians and participants from neighbouring countries.
The four-day festival attracted over 50,000 fishermen and thousands of spectators, featuring colourful cultural performances, canoe and swimming competitions, traditional boxing, music and dance displays, and the highly competitive fishing contest, where a 59-kilogram fish clinched the top prize.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s adviser on information and strategy, said the festival highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while boosting tourism and economic activities in the host community.
Tinubu praised Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for the effective planning and robust security arrangements that ensured the safe and successful hosting of the event.
He attributed the improved security situation in the state and neighbouring areas to sustained collaboration among federal and state governments, security agencies, and local communities, supported by enhanced intelligence gathering and grassroots engagement.
“The organisation, security arrangement, and internal outlook of the event demonstrate what is possible when leadership is purposeful and inclusive,” the president said. “The fight against insecurity of any kind, including banditry and insurgency, will be won.”
He assured Nigerians that farmers, fishermen, traders, and families would increasingly carry out their daily activities without fear, as security operations and development initiatives continue nationwide.
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to agriculture, tourism, food security, and rural development, noting that Kebbi State’s agricultural strengths would play a critical role in driving national growth. He added that joint federal and state efforts would focus on unlocking economic opportunities and improving livelihoods.
“The Argungu International Fishing Festival brings together people of different backgrounds, nations, and beliefs in the spirit of friendship and healthy competition. It showcases our heritage and projects Nigeria in a positive light to the rest of the world,” Tinubu said.
